Before

The Herbst appliance encourages the growth of the lower jaw. It is a
popular device designed to improve the way the upper and lower teeth
meet, and the patient's profile.

Placement
The Herbst is cemented to the upper and lower molars. Following the
installation of this appliance, many patients experience an initial period of adjustment - including mouth tenderness and soreness of teeth.

Care and Maintenance
Proper brushing may be more difficult with the Herbst, as plaque and food debris can accumulate on teeth and on the appliance. Clean all surfaces of teeth and the appliance after every meal - make sure to angle the brush towards the gums to clean under the gum line. When flossing, pay careful attention to the teeth in the back of the mouth.

Avoid sticky and hard foods, which can pull or bend the appliance. Call our office if the appliance becomes loose or if the screws or arms of the appliance break.
