Braces help guide teeth to their ideal position. Straight,
well-placed
teeth can greatly improve a smile.
Placement
Braces consist of brackets (clear or steel), elastics (rubber
bands),
bands, and wires. They can be adhered to the front or the
back of
teeth (lingual braces). Patients may experience initial discomfort,
including mouth soreness, following the installation of braces.
Care and Maintenance
Good oral hygiene is extremely important with braces. To avoid
tooth decay and decalcification marks (white spots), clean all surfaces
of the teeth and brackets after every meal - angle the brush towards
the gums to adequately clean under the gum line. Use a prescription
strength fluoride paste or a fluoride rinse to ensure strong and clean
teeth. Floss regularly each the areas between your teeth. Consider
a floss threader or an interdental toothbrush to reach behind
appliance wires.
To protect braces, avoid hard and sticky foods that can break
or detach wires. Chewing on nails, pens, or pencils can also
harm this appliance. If braces are damaged, call our office
and clearly describe the problem so that the appropriate appointment
can be made.
In some cases, oral surgery may be required to correct severe
crowding and jaw imbalance in conjunction with orthodontic
appliances. |
